Athlete Spotlight – January 2017

Welcome to 2017 everyone… for January, we’re highlighting a member and athlete who achieved some incredible accomplishments in 2016 – Leah Fleischel!

If you haven’t already figured it out from the pictures, Leah was pretty busy competing this year.

Leah grew up in South Jordan, UT.  She has a large family of 4 brothers and 2 sisters (and now 1 brother-in-law and 4 sister-in-laws), along with 3 nieces and 12 nephews.  They get together a few times a month to to have dinner or play games.  Every year for as long as Leah can remember, they enjoy going to Bear Lake with her mom’s side of the family for a family reunion.

For the past 3 years, 5 of her family members and Leah, have run a race called the Rivalry Relay.  It is a 60 mile relay race done in 1 day that starts at the UofU and goes to BYU.

Prior to and since starting Crossfit she would run races and triathlons.  She has run 2 marathons, 3 half marathons, and several 10k races.  She has also done 26 triathlons.

This past year Leah competed not only her first Spartan race ever but a Spartan trifecta.  That includes the Sprint (3-5 miles) Castaic Park in California, Super (8-10 miles) in Utah, and the Beast (13-15 miles) in Pasadena, CA.  The races she did in California were the first races I had done outside the state of Utah.

Leah likes being outside whenever possible (and it’s warm).  Her favorite place to camp is in the Uintas because not only is it pretty, but there are lots of places to fish while camping.

When did you start CrossFit and where?

-May of 2014 at Crossfit Sandy

What is your CrossFit “Superpower!”?

-Kettlebell Swings

What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

-Double Unders.  I’ve liked jump roping ever since I was little.  It’s fun to be able to do it again.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Why?

-Pull-ups.  Haven’t quite been able to get them yet.  Still working though.

Are there high points you’d like to share?

-Any time I get a PR or push through a hard workout it is a big accomplishment to me.  Being able to be physically fit enough to do Crossfit and become better is an amazing feeling that I want to continue.

Are there other members (or coaches if you can’t think of a member) who have had a significant impact on your time at CrossFit Sandy that you would like to share? What did they do for you?

-Jenn Jansen, she is the one that got me started at Crossfit and always encourages me to do better.

What is your favorite Hero WOD? Girl WOD? Other Benchmark or custom WOD that Bethanie programmed?

-Annie and Fight Gone Bad

Did you enjoy the extra-curricular activities at the gym? Christmas party, throwdowns, movies, outside the box activities (hiking, climbing, etc…). Which ones?

-Any time for us to all get together and be able to see both the morning and night crew at the same time is fun. We all had a lot of fun running at the Annual Sandy City Turkey Trot 5k.

Do you have any pieces of wisdom for new members?

-Consistency is key.

Do you have a favorite inspirational quote?

-“You have to believe that something different can happen. He who says he can and he who says he can’t are both usually right.”

What sports or activities do you participate in outside the box?

-Fly fishing, hiking, camping, quilting, and reading

What sports, events (races, competitions, etc…), or activities have had an influence on you throughout your life?  Why?

-I can’t really think of specific things that have influenced me.  I have always liked challenging myself and becoming better.  Every race or new thing I try has had an influence in who I am becoming!

We’re looking forward to sharing in Leah’s accomplishments in 2017!
