Athlete Spotlight – March 2016

It’s unlikely you’ve missed Denise Karren, CrossFit Sandy’s official welcoming committee, but on the off chance you have we wanted to introduce you!

You’d never guess Denise is 51 – she’s got boundless energy and just keeps on going. It’s been great to watch her progress and to have her as a friend these last several years.

Denise started CrossFit on April 15, 2012, and has been crossfitting for 4 years. She’s been with CrossFit Sandy since day 1. She started with Andrew Landau and had much encouragement from Samantha Bagely Stout to get through the door.  Sam bugged Denise to try CrossFit until she agreed to come and try one of the Saturday classes.  She obviously enjoyed it…and the rest is history!

Here’s a little Q&A from Denise:

What is your CrossFit “Superpower!”?

Cheering!!!  (we can’t argue with that one!) It’s my absolute super power!!!  Plus, I love doing clean and jerks.

Why Clean and Jerks?  I just feel like I can do them, most of the time, with the right form and technique. Those strength sessions with John have obviously paid off!

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Why?

Least favorite for sure is wall balls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Burpees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – that’s 2 movements, but maybe we can figure out a way to combine them into one just for Denise!

This is Denise finding out we programmed a nice couplet of wall balls and burpees!

Are there high points in your training or big accomplishments you would like to share?

Stringing double-unders together is always an accomplishment, and of course doing Murph under and hour!!

What is your favorite WOD?

I love Cindy!!!  I always feel like I should NEVER miss a benchmark, or a girl wod because that’s how I judge myself.  I love those!!! As hard as they are.

What other things do you enjoy at CrossFit Sandy?

Anytime we can get together outside of the gym, it’s a total bonus!!!!  We need to spend that time together getting to know each other and their family members that don’t crossfit.

Any words of wisdom?

DON’T QUIT!!!!  Crossfit is hard!  But if we all cheer each other on and stick with it, the rewards are huge!

What sports or activities do you participate in outside the box?

Anything outdoors.  Taking my dogs to hike or swim in a river or camping.  Summer is my favorite!!  We are a very sports oriented family.  We love watching sports!!

Speaking of family, we’re been lucky to have a whole bunch of them walk through our doors.
Brock, Chelsea, & Colby are all wonderful to have around!

And of course we love the extra cheering section that Brock and Chelsea bring to us! CrossFit for the Karrens is definitely a family affair!
