You may have heard this spotlight athlete yelling for her fellow athletes during grueling WODs, or you may have heard her yelling other things. Needless to say, Amber needs no introduction!

When did you start CrossFit and where?
I started Crossfit in about April 2015 at CFSandy
What is your CrossFit “Superpower!”?
If we’re talking movements – it’s getting sneaky PRs using the 0.5 and 0.25lb plates, but if I have a real CrossFit superpower, it’s coming up with creative non-politically correct things to say at the most inappropriate time. What can I say? I have no filter!
What is your favorite CrossFit movement? It doesn’t have to be the one you are best at! Why?
I can only have one? I like anything with a barbell – go heavy or go home! I’m currently loving the ones that are still super challenging for me like overhead squats.
What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? Why?
Snatches! I have ‘Trump hands’ and can’t get a good wide grip…and burpees. Nobody likes burpees.
Are there high points in your training or big accomplishments you would like to share?
I think my personal accomplishment is that I’m still here and enjoying every physical and mental achievement. I’ve come a long way from the girl at foundations class that had no self-confidence, being part of the CrossFit Sandy family has made me into the sort of person that doesn’t shy from a challenge or take any crap 🙂
Are there other members who have had a significant impact on your time at CrossFit Sandy that you would like to share? What did they do for you?
I can honestly say the entire family has held me up this past 2-½ years. I’ve had high points and low points, been the slowest, lifted the least load, fallen over or fell off things and the entire family has been in my corner encouraging me and cheering me on. A big part of my life is Bethanie, who has got me through a number of personal challenges this past 12 months – being a friend, a mentor, and just letting me ‘come lift some heavy stuff’ when I needed an escape from the outside world. I’ve been so blessed to find this family!
What is your favorite Hero WOD? Girl WOD? Other Benchmark or custom WOD that Bethanie programmed?
I love Annie as my annual “how am I doing?” and I really loved “The Chief” a few weeks back. Anything that doesn’t have burpees!
Did you enjoy the extra-curricular activities at the gym? Christmas party, throwdowns, movies, outside the box activities (hiking, climbing, etc…). Which ones?
I think the only extra-curricular activity I have is travel too much for work. But after moving to Utah, I’m loving the skiing (when we have snow!) and camping. I also don’t mind a good party or two.
Do you have any pieces of wisdom for new members?
You will have great days, and some really suck days. It happens to every athlete, and this is how we get better – so don’t get in your head and dont quit!
Do you have a favorite inspirational quote?
Not one that’s G-rated!
What sports or activities do you participate in outside the box?
I am working on my MBA, so that’s my big “activity” for the next 10 months.
What sports, events (races, competitions, etc…), or activities have had an influence on you throughout your life? Why?
For 20 years I was a competitive scottish drummer (bagpipe bands) – I’ve played in bands all over the world, competed at the World Championships in Grade 1 (top professional grade) several times and am still the only female to have won the North American Gold Medal which I got in 2012 for scottish drumming. It’s also how I met my husband Chris as we were kids in the same pipe band, and we’ve now been happily married for 11 years.
Fun facts from outside the gym:
- I think I’m the most well known for my talent of buying shoes online, namely No Bulls. I’m now onto my 6th pair – much to the displeasure of my husband.
- I have a giant crush on Thor Bjornnson (Who doesn’t??) and met him at a Scottish games in California a few years ago, and he signed my “lucky” weightlifting belt that gives me superpowers.
- I once fell during a Scottish pipe band concert that was being broadcast live on French TV, managed to save my drum but ended up with 12 stitches in my knee and I have an epic scar. So…it’s not just Crossfit that I fall over/off/in to things, but it’s always more gratifying if its on live TV.
Thanks Amber for taking the time to share all these great stories with us. Congratulations on winning unlimited burpees for 2018!Share
